How To Not Stick Out Like A Sore Thumb In Paris

I hate to tell you this, but it’s nearly impossible not to look like a tourist in Paris when you’re visiting. Parisians have a great sniffer when it comes to spotting their own. And trying too hard (think Emily In Paris) will only make you stick out more. I don’t think it’s terrible to look like a tourist, but why wouldn’t you want to fit in with the effortlessly cool and chic Parisians?

Here’s how to not stick out like a tourist when visiting Paris:

1. Dress Stylishly and Modestly:

Parisians often opt for classic and stylish outfits. Avoid loud patterns, graphic tees, and overly casual attire. Stick to neutral colors and well-fitted clothes. Also, avoid wearing overly revealing clothing, as Parisians tend to dress more modestly.

2. Wear Comfortable Shoes:

Paris is a walking city, so comfortable shoes are a must. Opt for stylish yet functional footwear like well-made sneakers, loafers, or ankle boots.

3. Carry a Tote Bag or Crossbody Purse:

Instead of bulky backpacks, carry a stylish tote bag or a crossbody purse. It's practical and blends in with the local fashion.

4. Learn Basic French Phrases:

Greet locals with a "Bonjour" (good day) and say "Merci" (thank you) when appropriate. Using a few basic French phrases shows respect for the local culture and can go a long way in interactions.

5. Use Public Transportation:

Parisians rely heavily on the city's efficient public transportation system. Use the metro, buses, and trams to get around like a local. Avoid renting a car unless necessary.

6. Avoid Obvious Touristy Gear:

Skip the "I Love Paris" shirts and other obvious touristy items. Opt for accessories like scarves or hats that blend in while also protecting you from the elements.

7. Embrace Café Culture:

Enjoy a leisurely café experience like the locals. Sit outside, people-watch, and take your time over a coffee or a glass of wine.

8. Respect Dining Etiquette:

Observe local dining customs, like keeping your hands on the table during meals and asking for the check when you're ready to leave. Avoid asking for substitutions or modifications in restaurants.

9. Explore Neighborhoods Off the Beaten Path:

Venture beyond the touristy areas and explore lesser-known neighborhoods. This not only helps you blend in but also provides a more authentic experience.

10. Be Mindful of Noise Levels:

Parisians value peace and quiet, so keep noise levels down in public spaces, especially on public transportation.

11. Avoid Rushing:

Parisians take their time to enjoy life. Avoid rushing through your activities and try to savor every experience.

12. Use a Map or Smartphone Discreetly:

If you need directions, avoid pulling out large maps. Use your smartphone discreetly to navigate and consult maps.

Remember, the goal isn't to completely hide the fact that you're a visitor but to show respect for the local customs and blend in to experience the city more authentically. Enjoy your time in Paris!
