Let’s Talk About Paris: Overrated Or Still A Valid Dream Destination?

The last time I was in Paris, half the city was blocked off due to protests, the streets were filthy, and the trains weren’t running. It was my second time in The City of Light, and it was so unpleasant my partner and I cut our stay and booked a flight to Spain instead. While I understand the timing was terrible, and I’m in full support of labor strikes, it’s difficult for me to recommend Paris as a destination for a honeymoon or milestone celebration.

While I appreciate Paris’s unique charm and cultural offerings, it isn’t without its flaws. The streets can be very dirty and full of dog feces, it’s expensive, and the food isn’t as amazing as it's hyped up to be. Maybe it’s just me, but I do not find it romantic in the least. I do, however, highly value its history and fantastic museums, which I fully indulged in when visiting. So yes, I believe Paris is overrated as a romantic destination, but it’s way too historically important to miss.

It's important you approach Paris with an open mind and consider your interests before forming your own opinion. I recommend exploring off-the-beaten-path areas and embracing the local culture can enhance your experience in this iconic city. Ultimately, whether Paris is considered overrated or not depends on your perspectives and travel goals.

If you want to explore Paris’s genuine charm away from the crowds, I recommend checking out the following places:

1. Canal Saint-Martin: This picturesque canal in the 10th arrondissement is a lovely place for a leisurely stroll. You can find trendy cafes, shops, and street art along its banks.

2. Buttes-Chaumont Park: This park offers a tranquil escape from the city's hustle and bustle. It's known for its hilly terrain, a man-made lake, and a picturesque temple on an island.

3. La Petite Ceinture: This abandoned railway line has been converted into a green space with walking paths and gardens. It's a unique way to explore the city's outskirts.

4. Parc des Buttes-Chaumont: A beautiful park with a lake, waterfalls, and walking paths. It's a favorite among locals for picnics and relaxation.

5. Père Lachaise Cemetery: While it's not entirely tourist-free, this cemetery is a peaceful place to explore and pay respects to famous figures like Jim Morrison, Oscar Wilde, and Edith Piaf.

6. Marché d'Aligre: This bustling market in the 12th arrondissement is a great place to experience everyday Parisian life. You'll find fresh produce, artisanal cheeses, and more.

7. Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature: This museum is dedicated to the art of hunting and nature. It's a unique and less-visited museum in the Marais district.

8. Promenade Plantée: This elevated linear park was the inspiration for New York City's High Line. It's a hidden oasis with gardens, art installations, and great views.

9. La Coulée Verte René-Dumont: Similar to the Promenade Plantée, this park is a green oasis on an old railway viaduct, offering a peaceful escape from the city.

10. Musée de la Musique: Located in the Parc de la Villette, this museum is dedicated to music and musical instruments. It's an excellent choice for music enthusiasts.

Exploring these less touristy areas in Paris can provide a more authentic and peaceful experience, allowing you to immerse yourself in the local culture and ambiance.
