Off-The-Beaten-Path in Paris: Passy Cemetery

Wander through this picturesque hillside cemetery with striking views to see the final resting places of luminaries like Debussy and Eiffel.

Why Visit: For its scenic location, impressive tomb artistry, and celebrity graves.

For Those Who: Enjoy exploring historic cemeteries, appreciate a good view and elegant memorials, look for hidden spots off the tourist track.

Tucked away in the upscale 16th arrondissement, Passy Cemetery provides a lush oasis on a hillside sloping down to the Seine. Opened in 1820 and dotted with mature trees, it holds the graves of many notable French figures.

See composer Claude Debussy's striking ghostly Angel of Music relief marking his grave, or the Art Nouveau tomb of Impressionist painter Berthe Morisot. Find industrialist Gustave Eiffel's final resting place under an elegant bronze figure. You'll find that discoveries delight around each turn.

After exploring the tombs, take in little-known vistas of the Eiffel Tower and city from the cemetery's higher points. Passy Cemetery is a perfect spot for a tranquil urban escape to admire nature, artistry, and history hand-in-hand.

What You Need to Know: The cemetery is located at 2 Rue du Commandant Schlœsing. It is open daily April-September and entrance is free.
