Off-The-Beaten-Path in Spain: Caminito del Rey - "The King's Little Pathway"

New pathways have been built so visitors can safely navigate the path

Traverse this breathtakingly precarious cliffside walkway originally built along steep gorge walls for workers at a hydroelectric dam.

Why Go: Experience a literal cliffhanger landscape while safely secured to rails along the rebuilt trail.

For Those Who: Want an adrenaline rush balanced with gorgeous scenery, don't fear heights, appreciate engineering marvels.

The Caminito del Rey ("King's Little Pathway") clings to the steep cliffs of the El Chorro gorge, offering thrillingly vertiginous views 100 meters down. Initially built in 1905 as part of the Guadalhorce River hydropower project, it deteriorated into a perilously narrow walkway before restoration in 2015.

Gaze out at turquoise reservoirs framed by limestone as you cautiously proceed single-file, safely harnessed, clinging to the sheer walls. Peer down past your feet through newly installed glass viewpoints to fully absorb the dramatic landscape from this feat of civil engineering.

While once hazardous, the refurbished trail lets adventurous visitors experience the breathless gorge views without risks, culminating in an unforgettable walkway worn smooth under centuries of workers’ footsteps.

What You Need to Know: Book timed tickets in advance online. The trail is located in Álora near Málaga. The 7.7km route takes 3-4 hours round trip.
