Off-The-Beaten-Path in Spain: Cuevas de Nerja

Interior of Cuevas de Nerja

Journey into the immersive subterranean world of these vast caves filled with otherworldly stalactites, rock formations, and Stone Age cave paintings.

Why Go: For an awe-inspiring view of enormity and antiquity concealed below ground.

For Those Who: Enjoy exploring caves, have an interest in archaeology and Paleolithic history, appreciate impressive geological formations underground.

The massive Cuevas de Nerja cave system stretches for nearly 5 kilometers across three levels, creating an expansive subterranean realm of soaring ceilings, fascinating rock shapes, and archaeological traces. These include 60,000-year-old paintings created by Stone Age inhabitants depicting seals and other animals.

Descend into the cool depths and crane your neck to admire the mightiest stalactite pillar, measuring 32 meters tall. Traverse passageways and grand caverns accented by delicate stalactites and translucent rock “draperies.” Marvel at how early inhabitants gathered here around fires, just as their wall paintings still dance in the flickering light today.

This well-developed complex allows you to immerse yourself deeply in the cave system, inviting true exploration and wonder. An illuminating look at geology and archaeology under the Andalucian hills.

What You Need to Know: The caves are located near Nerja, northeast of Málaga. Guided tours run frequently to walk through selected areas.
