Off-The-Beaten-Path in Tokyo: Omoide Yokocho ("Memory Lane")

Escape under the train tracks to this atmospheric alleyway bursting with cozy yakitori joints, bars, and old-school shanty shops.

Why Go: Experience classic Shitamachi atmosphere packed with lots of local flavor.

For Those Who: Seek old Tokyo vibes, love popping into tiny bars and eateries, enjoy getting lost in lively neighborhoods.

Omoide Yokocho, meaning "Memory Lane," transports visitors back to postwar Tokyo with its narrow alley crammed with tiny ramen, yakitori, and drinking establishments. Originally catering to commuters, it retains a nostalgic Showa-era ambiance.

Duck under the entrance curtain into holes-in-the-wall only seating 6-8 to chat with masters over grilled meat skewers and drinks. Try not to bump shoulders as you squeeze down the busy lane, checking out each shop's signature items, from fried gyoza to spicy tamago.

Soak up the welcoming atmosphere and the smell of tasty fare sizzling away as locals chatter and smoke under swirling lanterns—an ideal spot to experience historical Shitamachi culture.

What You Need to Know: Located in Shinjuku near the east exit of JR Shinjuku Station. Most shops open around 5 pm until late. Cash only.
