Off-The-Beaten-Path in Paris: Sculptures de Décure in the Catacombs

Updated: Oct 27, 2023

See the eerie yet extraordinary underground ossuary sculptures carved illegally by artist Décure within the atmospheric Paris Catacombs.

Why Visit: A rare chance to view stunning artwork among the bone-lined tunnels and caverns of this evocative subterranean site.

For Those Who: Have an interest in provocative art in peculiar spaces, want to see beyond the standard Catacombs tours, and appreciate creative passion despite questionable legality.

An obscure highlight of the Catacombs is a series of carvings created covertly by sculptor Décure in the 1980s within this underground sanctuary holding the remains of six million Parisians. His surreal gypsum sculptures include a dragon, allegorical figures, spiritual symbols, and his own visage.

Venturing beyond the standard ossuary passages on special tours allows access to Décure's hidden gallery, including "La Plage," depicting the sculptor himself under a cascade of skulls. His striking bas-reliefs emerge hauntingly from the dark, dank cavern walls.

While officially prohibited, Décure's illegal sculptures have been granted protected status for their cultural significance. The Catacombs' caretaker even successfully campaigned to provide Décure amnesty from arrest or fines for his secret endeavors. This cloak-and-dagger art tale continues to fascinate.

What You Need to Know: Special tours allowing access to Décure's sculptures run on certain weekends and nights. Standard Catacombs tours visit alternate areas.
