Looking to do some solo travel but tired of the same ole popular tourist traps? I feel you. As an avid solo wanderer, I'm always on the hunt for unexpected places and underrated locales where I can roam freely without the crowds.
If you want to venture somewhere mesmerizing yet isolating for your next solo adventure, add these offbeat destinations to your bucket list:
Faroe Islands
This rugged, misty volcanic archipelago in the North Atlantic oozes magical isolation. Base yourself in the capital Tórshavn then hit the road to explore empty fjords, towering sea cliffs, and quaint hamlets surrounded by grass-roofed cottages.
Sapa, Vietnam
Trek solo through rice terraces, stay in hill tribe homestays, and traverse scenic valleys on foot around Sapa in Northern Vietnam. It's easy to disappear into nature here. Bonus: the regional cuisine is incredible.
Azores, Portugal
Get lost wandering between colorful villages, soaking in hot springs, and roaming volcanic crater lakes in the remote Azores. On São Miguel Island, take a dip at uncrowded Ponta Da Ferraria then mingle with friendly locals over a glass of vino.
Lofoten Islands, Norway
Be awestruck by the otherworldly beauty of Norway's Lofoten Islands, where snow-dusted peaks meet glittering fjords. Base yourself in Reine then set off by ferry to explore secluded fishing hamlets and dramatic coastal trails at your own pace.
When solo travel gets lonely, mingling at cozy cafes, local bars and guesthouse hangouts is a great way to meet fellow wanderers. Pack a journal, dive into that book you've been wanting to read, and relish having the freedom to roam off the beaten path. Where will your solo travels take you next?
Some key packing tips: comfortable walking shoes, lightweight layers, rain jacket, mini first aid kit, headlamp/flashlight, reusable water bottle, and a sturdy backpack to carry it all. Most importantly, bring an open mind and sense of adventure!
